Thread: Different cover for engine bay electric panel before 1972?

Different cover for engine bay electric panel before 1972?

Was the plastic cover for the fuse/relay panel in the engine bay different before 72? The holes for the securing screws on a later cover that I have don't seem to line up with the threaded fittings on my 1971. Also, should this have knurled knob screws, or wing screws?

If the earlier panel is different, would someone please post a photo of one?

No, the electrical consoles are interchangable between '71 and '72. What you probably have is a much later cover. Can you post a photo of the cutouts? Those are what determine the application.

My car has a 3.0 liter, which was installed way before I bought the car. The source of the confusion, I believe, is that the electric panel is from a 78 vintage car, based on the voltage regulator and the absence of the 71 911T speed relay. This later electric panel was probably installed at the same time as the engine to have a matching voltage regulator and the CDI box for the SC distributor. The problem is that the upper mounting hole in the cover, which is definitely correct for an SC, doesn't line up with the mounting tab on the side of the engine bay.

    Tom,
This is the correct cover for a '71.
The fastening holes will line up vertically and have the knurled screws.
Later covers have the holes in an offset position.
This was the first year of these fuse covers.

    Cheers,
    Dennis.

    72 engine room relay cover

My 72 T 1345 is missing it`s cover. I purchased one from a German supplier with wing nuts some time ago.I test fitted yesterday and it seems to align....except the top threaded mount has a condenser in that port. It looks like it belongs there, except it is in the way of the winged screw. The three/ four fuse holder does not have a cover, so i believe it needs this relay cover.

Are the knurled screws correct for this earliest cover ? Or does it get the winged screws ? ......Cliff Reference-(post # 4 picture)

Knurled screws are correct for '71 and '72. Wing screws were introduced sometime in '73, fairly early on I believe.

    Hi,

In the RS book the date of change is listed as Jan 3rd 1973. "Winged screw 6 x 12 ( DIN 316) used on the hostalen cover instead of knurled screw 6 x 12 (to facilitate loosening)."
