    Black hood hinge trivia

I have a theory about rear hood hinge color on 71s. My car, which has been repainted, but is still pretty nice, has black hood hinges. It is late production, chassis no. 9111102572, which makes it a Porsche built coupe. Also, it has (I should say had, because it's mostly removed) factory air conditioning. The hood hinges are different from standard ones inasmuch as they have holes where the rear condenser and hoses mount. Could it be that Porsche continued to use black hood hinges that it had on hand for A/C cars later into 1971 production?

    Inquiring minds want to know.

Well, my 70S had air conditioning (COA). Hinges are body color and I think the holes for the hose clamps were just drilled into the standard hinges for the sheet metal screws.

Factory air? Most were dealer installed. Factory air cars have a box welded into the front pan for the front condenser fan, and the windshield washer bottle is up at the rear of the trunk, held in place with a rubber strap.

It was complete when I bought it. I removed all of the AC components including the hose brackets and sold it off as a complete package but, I did photo document. It is on my COA. I don't ever recall seeing the wiper fluid bottle moved on a 70.

I believe that 64,65,66,67 had black hinges with the bolts also painted black, after that it went to body color. I'm not sure on the year change.

Here's what I understand. You can't fit the front condenser/fan without relocating the washer bottle. I thought that all factory A/C units in LWB cars had the front condenser. SWB cars with factory A/C have the front condenser in the right front wheel house, according to the factory manual. The front condenser was eliminated for a while after 74, then returned with the familiar plastic fan/housing arrangement, and simple rectangular hole in the front pan, by 78.

Also, the factory units that I've seen had the hose clamps held by small nuts and bolts, not sheet metal screws.

Can you show photos of the arrangement on your car?

Anyway, on my 37 year old car, it's perfectly possible that someone painted the hood hinges black, of course. The paint looks really old, however, and judging by other paint and trim on the car, I infer that the hood hinges were black from new.

The factrory front underpan condensor didnt come along until early in 70 production.

When the cars were prepared for paint at the factory,, the hinges were already bolted in place to the chassis proir to paint and were sprayed along with the rest of the body.. If your hinges are original,, there will be body color under the black.
