Barrrett-Jackson on TV - Send Help

I have this strange fascination with the television coverage of the B-J Arizona auction. I have about zero interest in 99% of the cars there, but I can't stop watching. It's like driving by a traffic accident where you just can't help slowing down and looking. Some sort of morbid fascination.

As near as I can tell, most cars only do three things: accelerate, brake and turn. Our cars do all three really well. Most of the cars at B-J do maybe one -- and they commonly sell for over $100K. Meanwhile we complain about the escalation of prices of early 911's?

If collector cars were securitized like everything else, I'd arb it -- short 'Merican Muscle and long early P-Cars. Couldn't lose.

    Cheers,

I'm with you. Can't help myself.

Just watched someone buy a Superbird for $200,000 that had been wrecked, rebuilt, repainted and had a nose from a different car! He was ecstatic. But it is a great car to drive. Unless you want to turn. Or stop. Or get comfortable on on that vinyl bench seat.

And I'd pay someone $25 to kill that auctioneer dude who screams like a freaked schoolgirl every time he logs a bid.

Don't feel too bad - I have been watching off and on for the last 8 hours. I would compare the feeling to having a real hot girlfriend you know you are going to dump, but she is so hot you have a tough time keeping your hands off her after meeting the perfect woman but not yet consummating the friendship with her.

When the fakey-doo 59 Corvette (new C5 frame/engine with a stretched body) rolled off the block at $150,000 I figured it was all down hill from there.

The last thing from the podium was: "Yes, it's all numbers matching". Stupid question and an incredulous answer.

PS: Somebody paid $125,000 for the Beverly Hillbillies truck. Must have been drinking some of Granny's tonic.

I think Rick must have been drinking some of Granny's tonic when he posted this response, or at least some of Cornliquor's 151.

What???? Y'all gots a problem with good ol 'forget about turning and braking' Merican street hardware?????? I have a cure....fire up your 911 and carve some curves up like a hot knife thru butter. You'll feel much better and maybe even tolerate that floor phreak's screeching when he gets a bidder going at the BJ. Now I must trudge out thru the snow to my 911's crib and fondle, errrrr, work on her a while. Only a couple months now until the roads will be salt free.

Yeah, I can't help myself either. I just like looking at all the cars and crazy prices. It is mostly stuff that I have no interest in, but I do appreciate some of the restos. It is really just a three ring circus for car nuts with lots of money. I think the only one that benefits from all this is BJ. Think of all the cash they rake in because of all the hype that is now surrounding the auction market that they helped create.
