If You Know Early Carrera's, Please Read This

I have been waiting to figure out what direction to take in restoring this car - track or street. Today I discovered it has TWO sets of chassis numbers stamped in it.

    1. The normal "*9114600350*"

    2. Above the normal set of numbers is "*0070020*". This is also the same
set of numbers in the passenger knee pad area on the dash.

This car was brought in from Europe many years ago with the rollcage, metal rear flares, and with no factory undercoating. The PO modified the cage to allow stock metal doors, found a factory Turbo Carrera tail, and hung the carbon fiber front end and rear bumper. The vintage Gotti's are from a IMSA car. There is a roof mounted two-way radio antenna.

I want to restore this car for what it really is, or was, so any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi
i am absolutely NO expert in these BUT the second number MAY be a Kremer (or other builder) number for a car built up, say, as a Kremer RSK from a stock 1974 Carrera donor car.

I don't have any reference books on them but I believe that Kremer used this type of serial number for cars they built up from scratch and some other teams may have as well.

I have seen references to Kremer cars with a 00x 00yy identity where the x seems to signify the year - ie in this case 1977.

John Starkey would certainly be likely to know more as would some of the other people who are very knowledgeable in this area

Also it may be worth asking Kremer directly if it is one of theirs - if so they should be able to match the two numbers and tell you what it was built as.

It is also possible it was a car that was reshelled at some time using a "replacement" body with the number 007 0020?

I sent an email to John Starkey. He did confirm that this was a street Carrera that was re bodied at the factory in 1977. If I can come up with more info from it's past to give him some direction, he will be able to research it better (for a 'fee'). I have put an email out to the prior owner and will share it's contents here.

I am not familiar with why the factory would re body a street car. If someone could please explain why this would be done.

The car came without any motor or transmission. I have an extra 911/83 motor from '75, but it sounds like the '76 or '77 3.0 Carrera motors or the Ruf 3.2 SCR motor we have in stock would be a better match?

    91146....

is a '74 RoW Carrera. Should have the 911/83 motor.

Hope I'm not stating the obvious.

I bought a '74 Euro Carrera a while back and I've compiled a bit of information about them HERE.

FWIW -- I don't know how much that helps with your particular car.
