Thread: weber 46's exchange?

    weber 46's exchange?

I have a '70T with a later 2.4E engine running on 46 mm Webers. I do not know much about carbs and asked my shop to adjust them since the engine runs very rough at low rpm. He tells me these are 46 mm racing carbs without progression ports (??) and will not work well for street use. He is offering me to exchange the carbs for rebuilt 40 mm Webers, no charge, and says the engine will run much better on them for street use. Since I have no idea about the value of either the 40's or the 46's, I was hoping you guys can shed some light on this. Does this trade make sense?? Thanks, Arjen

A straight up trade is not fair. 46IDAs are much more expense and rarer.

He is correct about the carbs not being good for the street, especially at the 2.4T displacement with the 32mm port size. (maybe they could be okay with a larger engine with bigger ports). I am sure others will chime in.

    Hope this helps,

46s are more valuable than 40s, but 40s will run unbelievably better. Considering the 40s are fresh, that adds value. If he includes the swap labor, I'd probably do it.

    Thats a good call,...

The 46's have poor progression port positioning and do not run very well on motors used for the street, especially smaller ones with mild cams.

A set of 40's in excellent shape are FAR more preferable.

There is a big difference in value so I would negotiate the trade!!

thanks for the quick response, guys. This website never seizes to amaze me...
Anyway, the 2.4 engine is temporary, since I have a 3.0MFI engine that will be going in. I can also keep the 2.4 engine as it is until the 3.0 swap, and sell the 46's later when the 2.4 engine is out. Just to cover some of the cost of the engine swap. In that case, how much can I expect to sell the 46's for? Anybody here interested? Thanks, Arjen
