    Question Having trouble breathing

OK, thought I'd start a new thread on this to avoid hijacking Milou's any further. The fact is I was totally unaware of plastic air cleaners except for the 72/73 MFI. So, a new fresh topic for me, might be old hat to some but, I don't care.

SO, we have input from Ed of a 69-70 parts manual, 72 revision that lists the following:

    69 T steel air cleaner 901.108.028.01
    69 E/S steel air cleaner 901.108.028.02

    70 T plastic air cleaner 911.108.001.02
    70 E/S plastic air cleaner 911.108.027.00

My 71 parts manual, 72 revision lists the following:

71 T Air cleaner, made of plastic 911.108.001.02 (exact nomenclature)
71 E/S Air Cleaner 911.108.027.00 (exact nomenclature and does not say "plastic").

Since I'm still a bit illiterate outside my 70/71 comfort zone , would someone care to fill in the numbers from the 72 and 73 parts manuals? I'm talking about the actual period paper manuals, not PET numbers or poser paper manuals of PET printouts (what a F'n ripoff ). I would also like to hear from people who have 69-70 and 71 parts manuals of the original revision to see if different numbers were listed. Please list the revision date of your source.

Here is where my selfishness kicks in...I'm going to talk MFI only here. Sorry Carbs... I don't recall ever seeing a 70-71E/S MFI Air cleaner in plastic. Maybe I have and I never logged the difference. Also, with Ed's reference note in his 69-70 manual about the replacement part in a 72 revision, this leads me to believe that the steel air cleaner 901.108.028.02 was the original part for the 70 E/S. My Jan 70S cleaner is steel and I'm positive my engine is 100% original and has never been out of the car till now. Since the plastic air cleaner was standard on the 72MY for the E/S, it makes some sense to me at least, that replacement parts for the 69-71 E/S of the same vintage would be plastic as well and those new numbers would be listed in revised editions of the manuals. The second half of my selfishness on this subject is my goal to loose as much weight as possible in the rear of my S. There, I've said it and I feel better.

I agree that quite likely late 71MY E/S cars had transitional parts i.e. plastic, so I'd like to concentrate up to mid MY71.

So, original late 70-Early 71 E/S owners....show me your original plastic air cleaner. Please list VIN or production date if known.

Thanks for starting this thread Michael, I'll be following it with interest. Who would have thought air cleaners could create so much discussion.
