According to Jim Schrager's
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
new book which I highly recommend as it has, among many other things, THE most complete and accurate early 911 production information I have ever seen published....
Anyway, in 1969 there were 2826 911Es produced with 583 Sporto 911E engines (they have their own "E" type number) produced. There probably were a couple spare engines produced but using these numbers 20.6% of 911Es that year were sportos. Since the Es were the luxury cruisers of their day, a higher percentage of them had Sprotomatics. Probably the same luxury comment applies for sunroofs, so it might be higher than 10%, which is what some estimate for sunroofs. My personal experience on early 911s is that sunroofs were rare, probably 10% or less.
From 1968 through 1973 there were about 6,100 Sportos across all models. Total cars produced was about 72,000. The average for Sportos then ,was a little over 8%, so you can see 69 911Es had a higher percentage of Sportos.

Update for 1968 Sportos: 911L and 911 "normal" (the normal and the L used the same engine and sproto transmission type) Sportos ROW 247, Normals/L US 463, T (ROW) 378, S (ROW) 227. These actually are engines and for each type could have been Coupe or Targa. As a guess I'd distribute them in the same ratio as coupes to targas. In 1968 there were 5252 total coupes and 1672 Targas. By 1973, there were 7878 Coupes and 5194 Targas.
I have one also, a '68 base 911 that was originally a sporto. It has a 902/1 in it now though.....
A nice thing about the '68 sporto is that it has the 911S brakes. Mine also has tinted windows and 911S oiltank and instruments per the Cardex.
Thanks for that info, just what I was looking for and I will keep an eye out for that book.
My car seems to be the same as yours Fritter! now with a 5 speed, and all the "S" bits with window tints (Blue I think)
Thanks again
Some interesting Sporto numbers + references
Hi Fritter-- When you say " mine has a 911S oiltank" , what does that mean exactly? All I know is the oil tank on the sporto's was bigger for the extra oil needed to run the engine and Sporto system. Chris
