I can't find that anywhere in the various trans lists, sn 3282674. Any ideas?
Also, can someone please verify this engine id: 901/01 sn902562 as a 1965 2.0.

Yes, all 901/01 are 2,0 liter engines, and they are either 1965 or 1966 up until the february transition to Webers (when they became 901/05)
Never heard of a 901/05 gearbox though, most are either 901/01 (very early) or 902/1 (sounds like a four-speed but isn't)

Thanks John, here is a pic of the trans case:

Hi,
It is a "special request" box from 1968. The spec is partly determined from the sn (4/5 spd, engine spec, 4/6 cyl). I forget the translation method but it has been posted here (or pelican).
I also have one with sn:3282139. (5 speed)
Mine have a std simplified dif (no LSD) and the six bolt axle flanges. I have yet to determine the ratios.
I'd be interested to find out what ratios etc you have.
Cheers, Bruce.
What is the difference between a simplified and std diff?Mine have a std simplified dif
Richard
The simplfied used bolts with a pin on the end to hold the spider gear shaft the non simplified used the threaded section of the bolt to hold it in place.....the pin would wear and break allowing the spider gear shaft to come loose.
The 901/05 I broke down this summer had standard ratios A F M S X

Thanks Tony for explaning. Makes you wonder why they offered a simplified diff. The costs diff. seems minimal to me and doesn't way up to the risk.

The "simplified diff" (not an official porsche term), was a modification in the late 60's , probably to reduce costs. I did'nt mean to imply it was an option or choice.
The diff gears are suported by a small pin on the end of each axle flange bolt. However these wear out very quickly and if not replaced in time, the pin breaks off and the gears drop. The gearbox is then scrap (plus the car if you are cornering fast and the rear wheels seize up).
The set up was changed in 70 or 71, I think.
There is a large amount of info on pelican about it, including details of how to replace it with the "non-simplified" parts (can use 914 for example).
One tip. If you remove the bolts to check the wear on the end (annual check I would say). ONLY remove one bolt at a time or the gears will drop in the diff.
Cheers, Bruce.
Can someone please point me to a S/n decoder. I thought there was a link to one here but I can't find it. A good friend of mine has stumbled across a 901/05 box and asked me what I knew about it. I found this thread and asked him the S/n of the box. It is 3282158.
TIA,
