Thread: Pegged Oil Level Gauge

    Question Pegged Oil Level Gauge

My Oil Level Gauge was reading correctly without issues...until today.

This morning I had the back of the car jacked up with the rear wheels removed so I could access the wheel wells to scrape away the loose and flaking spots of undercoating. The good news is that there are no signs of any rust or collision repairs. Just 36 years of dirt, grime, and grease build-up which was mainly located around the oil tank and its lines. I was able to get most of that cleaned up with an old paint brush and mineral spirits.

With wheels back in place, and the car back on the floor, I fired it up and immediately noticed that the Oil Level Gauge's needle is now pegged all the way to the top....past full. I warmed it up to operating temp and then checked the oil level with the stick, and it's just below the stick's top mark.

So, my question is, any ideas what may be causing the false reading at the gauge, and how I can fix it?

    thanks,

    Frank

You may have knocked the ground wire off it's connection on the oil tank. I think this would cause the false reading. Just check the wiring to the oil tank and try it again.

Like mentioned above you probably knocked the wire loose and it is touching the tank causing the wire to go to ground which will cause the gauge to move to the full mark.
