I should know the answer to this but when did the tools stop saying drop forged and start saying selected steel. I have a 12/1972 build so what should it have?
Thanks in advance

FWIW, here is my almost complete set from my '73.5 (I am missing the pliers and fan pulley wrench). My open ends are "Special Selected Steel".

I can go diggin' later this week; My E has a clasp type bag; but was built "mid" MY?
Clyde,
I have seen another 12/72 toolkit that has a mixture of both types of wrenches. I was just researching this exact same topic, trying to determine correct kit for a 4/73 build date car.

Eric, there's been some recent debate on the "other" board as to the proper wrenches in a 72 tool kit. I know of at least one PERFECT original toolkit that has German DIN wrenches in it, but they are not the "Drop Forged" or "Selected Steel" wrenches that we're all used to.
Here's a few pictures. The first photo is of the kit I mentioned above; the other photos are of a kit owned by Bill Verburg and comes from his 72 - it's purported to be original.
What do you think?

I've never seen those kind of open in wrenches in ANY early 911 kit. Further the spark plug wrench with the taper at the top, I've only seen that in the later 73 kits. And finally, the 1/2 open alternator wrench definitely is from a later kit. Plus, the kit that Andrew shows has a 912 spark plug wrench.
And the top kit has a post 73 bag for sure, the mid 73 bag should have ties and before, clasps. So, IMHO, each kit pictured above definitely has, at least, on wrong element thereby making any of them suspect in other ways as well. Especially with the strange open end wrenches pictured.
