    Keep Trunk Original?

    Guys,

My '71 has been cosmetically restored inside and outside including the engine compartment. The trunk is weakest area of the cars condition as it is in its original state with the exception of the fuel tank being stripped, cleaned, and resealed. I would like to repaint it so the level of finish is more consistent with the rest of the car. Before I do, is there any reason to keep it as is?

    Opinions appreciated...

    Tom,

It is amazing how much sparkle can be added to your trunk with a little/lot of TLC.
Even though you may not look at this area frequently,it will make your renovations nicely complete.
Pics from my recent rustoration-the flat area in front of the fan/fibreboard was straight but with scabby surface corrosion.

    Cheers,Dennis.

Good input gents. Dennis (my '71S brother), great job and photos, looks fantastic! Did you leave or recreate the original textured area in front of the spare and fuel tank?

    All the best,

    Tom,
I agree with Clyde. Your car is PERFECT. Cosmetically (interior and paint) and mechanically it with the best.
If the paint is original, clean up the grease/smudges with a safe cleaner. Then try a cleaner/wax to bring it to shine. Replace the hoses if needed. Then a NEW front trunk carpet kit.

Why risk damaging the rest of the car at the body shop? I know first hand that happens. Then they say it was like that when you brought it in. Something simple can get really big/expensive really quick.

TKO, I think that you will find that the painter at Porsche did not waste too much paint in your trunk. It's supposed to look half-finished, in other words. Some clean up of the yellowed adhesive that the factory used to afix the side carpet pieces should clean it up nicely. Try 3M Adhesive Remover. Leave the black tar around the shock towers, however, because it seals out water.
