How are these gears and why was it optional on E and S models, was it because its a 4 speed and 5 speed were standard while 4 spd was optional?

trying to understand the options philosophy,
I always assumed that if its optional or extra, that it would be an upgrade, adding a desired feature?? is this the case...or is it an option todowngrade?
    aside from preference?
    is this gear combo desirable?

For me, an optional 4-speed when 5-speed was standard would definitely be a "downgrade." I doubt there were many installed in the 911S or E in '68.

The gear ratios for the 4-speed are simply spread out more in 2nd and 3rd to cover the same speed range as the 901/02. You can see they both start with A and end with Z, but the 3 gears between of the 5-speed as opposed to only 2 with the 4-speed would do a much better job of keeping the engine in the high-torque band of the motor, at the expense of shifting a bit more. Totally worth it, in my view.

I would second Tom...that spread from HB to S would drop your revs WAY too far in an S...or an E.
