Hello wise ones,
Where should I look for the 3 digit number that is stamped on the engine lid? The lid has been repainted, so I'm thinking it might be hard to find. I'd like to know where to start looking.
Thanks,
Alan

Alan,
Check out this link. This was discussed over at the 912 site.
Engine lid number
Good luck with your search.

Hi Alan,
You'll find it on the the centre rib (grille side), usually near the top.

Is the same three digit number stamped in the front lid on a '65? Assume the doors are similarly marked in grease pencil?

The bonnet has the number on one of the hinge mounts and the doors are stamped on the inner frame (like a 356). The front wings are also stamped in the headlight buckets.

Hi, we have had some discussion about this before. The discussion was for slightly newer cars.

That's a great photo, which also shows the correct satin black paint in the engine lid grille. I don't think that the factory wanted anyone to notice the framework. Does anyone have any idea at what chassis number they stopped doing this?
Cheers

I've wondered about the black paint as well. Looking at the 1964 cars, I don't think any have the black paint. It's hard to tell on the dark cars, but I think Seinfeld's 300049 has body color under the grill.
Any black paint experts out there?
Alan
