John at speed at night there is no such thing as too much light

I used to have a Lancia back in the early 80's with 600 watts of light across the front (2 x 100W super oscars and tricked up 4 x 100w carellos when on high beam in the normal light mountings). That would be about the same as Raj's car when running the 6 hood lights although his would probably give a better light pattern.

I never felt like i was running out of vision even at speeds of 160 - 180kph on the open road at night. That light setup gave a good half kilometer of "daylight" in front.

Even though i don't really drive my 911 much in the country at night i am in the process of collecting the parts to replace my H4's with a setup similar to what Raj has on his car - SWB buckets, 356 clear lens and dual reflector 7 inch lights which bolt straight into the SWB buckets - ie with a built in driving light effectively giving the functionality of a hood light within the standard lights. I know a number of other people on the board have gone that way as well with their early cars. I think that Bob Tilton amongst others have done a thread on it.

The car is stunning, Raj... sorry not to have met you there. Among several fascinating details, curious if the lights were paired on
separate switches for redundancy? Seems reasonable that the extra lights were installed for inevitable breakages expected on rally stages.
Any word from Zasada about them?

I was admiring the car and taking pictures when I looked up and saw a smiling face.
Didn't realize it was Raj's ( the car - the face I recognized right away).

Raj, I was hanging with Aaron by your car for a while. I wish we could have met in person. For as many people as I saw at RRIV there was just as many that I didn't see. I was all over the place. The car is so cool. Can you post a picture of the the gas tank? Thanks, -Scott

    varunan123 ,

The starkey write up is a bit unclear, does it have motor 662 2022 ....or 663 0533 ?

And whichever it has , where is the other motor ? And where is 632 1213 , also stated to be a 2.8(originally 2.5)......does it still exist ?

It does not specify which case exactly was reinstalled during the Autofarm restoration after Sean Campbell's use in 1977. Only that Campbell was using 663 0533 (also in 2.8 form). And that they installed the 'RSR twin-plug' engine (this could be either , as I do not know if Campbell /or Agnew before him/ was running twin plug on 663 0533.....was 0533 in the car during Agnew's period ?).

Also , how did Palmer , Agnew , Campbell , or Autofarm get 663 0533 ? This is from a Factory owned sport model , and there is no mention of Stanley Palmer getting an extra 2.7 motor (only extra RSR motors). Do you know what happened to 360 0521 , the Factory owned RS 2.7 Sport that motor 0533 came from ?

It seems that whatever case number , it David Agnew started out with a 2.7 motor :

"Josh Sadler remembered: "Steve Carr, my then partner, went out to the factory to see the car and Stan Palmer negotiated the deal over the next few months. The car came into England as a rolling chassis, that is, without an engine. We installed an RS 2.7 engine into it."

(to anyone who has not freshly read the Starkey write-up , all these motor numbers might be confusing . But i'm sure varunan123 is familiar with them).

Thx in advance for any further details.

I will let Raj cover what engine is in it now etc but I understood that Stanley Palmer bought 3 engines "with" the car - ie at the same time but separate and noted as "damaged" so they, and the car without an engine, would not attract the level of taxes that a complete car would.

I have recorded that they were:
    662 2005

693 0030 an early RSR engine but not listed in the "RS" book and interestingly it seems that all the M491 cars in the book that do have a 693xxxx engine seem to be between 693 101 and 693 0164 (plenty of numbers for spares) and this is "0030".
However R6 (0588) (amongst other werks cars) is shown in the book with unlikely engine number 6630000 and according to Singer it had a 911/74 engine 693 0035 at the 1973 Targa. So it may be the "693" engines below number 0101 were werks RSR ones.

    662 2022 from 1972 ST 911 230 0538

Starkey notes that a completely different engine (663 0533) was in it when it was later sold to autofarm in 1978 and that later, when it was being restored, a twin plug RSR engine was fitted.

Great docs Raj. Thanks for sharing. It was good to see this car again at another Rennsport. I remember the first time I saw it at Daytona and saying to myself '3600001?', you have got to be kidding me. A cool revelation that this car still existed.:)
