Brett Johnsons book says 68 S and L headliners are not the same material as other 911s. What is this material? My 66 has 68 seats, door panels and a headliner material more pebble grain and whiter than usual. Is this the 68 material?

68 is still perforated, yet the material is a wider "pleather "grain, this was an experiment year in faux graining, including the bull hide door panels. Also was the one year seam sealing vinyl with heat that sealed the cardboard insert into the door pocket. New manufacturing techniques that proved rather cheap and flimsy, ergo the 69+ door pockets, stronger yet more complicated in production and install, which led to the 74, simpler yet faster, although the still dubious cardboard, flocked for a finish, failing with moisture. The only place the cardboard actually worked is the glovebox. heat sealing the visors with a safety foam was another long term failure, I imagine they were heat sealed, placed ina mold , injected as a balloon fill and cured. However the foam crumbles with age as we know. So back to headliners of 68, yes they are unique material, if you can save yours and vinyl dye/paint it, you should.
Interesting info about the 68 headliner. Mine is just like you described but is black. It was the only item that did not get replaced when I re-did the interior. Was black an option?

I would be happy to see detailed pictures of the different headliners used.
Thank you!

here are some pics of a very late 68 911L headliner
I wonder if the headliners differ based upon cars with basketweave vs elephant hide interiors ?

Ahhhh the sixties... I envision myself one early Saturday morning wearing plaid shorts, black shoes with white socks smoking a cigarette heading to the hardware store to buy a bag of nails.
SWB cars are an acquired taste however once acquired theirs no turning back.
Man, one more item to add to the list. 68 911s are like 64 VWs....lot's of one only items. The thrill of the hunt!
