    Sunroofs

Something I've been curious about for a long time...

In the 356 world cars with sunroofs are highly desired and sell for premium prices to non-sunroof cars. But my perception is that there is not much price difference between early 911's equipped with sunroofs and those without. Is that correct?

If so, do a lot of early 911 folks prefer cars without sunroofs? This forum may not be the right place to ask, as we tend to be a pretty hard-core group, but I thought I'd post this little survey asking if you prefer a coupe with or without a sunroof.

    Cheers,

I understand the attraction but I strongly dislike sunroofs. Even when I have one it NEVER gets opened.

In Porsches, I dislike sunroofs primarily because of the lower headliner - and I'm not even tall enough to have clearance issues. When the roof is open the sun always seems to find its way above my glasses and onto the back of my neck ... even in the middle of the night. My list of gripes is long, but I will end here so as not to offend.

From a $$$ perspective, I believe that sunroof cars are beginning to distance themselves more and more from their solid-roof counterparts. It's a known fact that if the roof goes down the price goes up - sun seems to drive the values up for some reason. And, typically, if a car was factory-equipped with a sunroof it's more likely to have other factory options as well. All of this adds a premium to the car's resale value.

I have always liked sunroof cars, especially ones that work well
As I have posted on other threads here, a sunroof coupe is the perfect compromise between a coupe and targa. The lines and stiffness of the early coupe cars are great, but it is hard to beat open air driving on a nice day or night. I am 6' 2" and still have at least an inch of room between the top of my head and the roof, so height is not an issue, unless you are a really tall person, or plan on wearing a helmet. Even then, there are ways to bring down the height of the seat bases which could give you an extra 1-2 inches if necessary.
As for it being a rare option, it has been written somewhere that only appr 10% of all early 911's had sunroofs, and it was an expensive option. So that should speak for itself as far as collectability goes.

I regret selling my 73 sunroof coupe, even though I have 71 non-sunroof coupe in better condition, now. I prefer a sunroof 911, even though I have clearance problems with them.

I personally like the Non Sun Roof better....seems like every sun roof I have ever had developed issues....leaks, mechanical, etc....and as already said it didn't get used that much......

sunroofs are popular and command more money in 912s. i know its not the same car, but i would expect the demand type to be similar because of body type and years are the same. another thing is the fact that the 912s value is in correlation with the 911 value, due to obvious reasons. i would expect the same sunroof trend to be big with the 11 crowd, so hearing this is suprising.

    personally i like coupes.

I bought my 72S because it was the best car I could find for the money, plus it belonged to a friend and I was very familiar with it. It is a non sunroof car. . I am very happy with the car but as I live in the South and the car has no AC, a sunroof would have probably been a better car for me.
Now 10 years ago I flipped a 65C coupe on a 65 SC sunroof coupe precisely because it had a sunroof. Being an SC did not hurt, with both cars being roughly equal in condition.
I have enjoyed both cars a great deal.
