    1968 911 Targa Usa

As an owner of one serial #11880191;while browsing thru Peter Morgan's book"ORIGINAL PORSCHE 911", he states only 134 USA 911 targas were built;that would make it the lowest number type produced besides 1964 901/911 at 13

can this be true;on top of this mine is a soft window targa, how rare is this???

    Frank-
Not sure which publication is "more correct" as I am sure records are sketchy from back in the day, but Porsche 911 Red Book states there were 268 targas produced in 1968 in the "normal" config.

Beautiful car by the way, however I am still a fan of your 67S...maybe I could afford it in another lifetime.

Very aware of the subject Frank, I learned to read as a young child. The "8" in the fourth digit of the VIN represents "US Targas." If we both agree on that, I can move on. The Red Book states the VIN range for that particular model is 11880001-11880268 with the column under "produced" listing 268. There is not a varient listed of the 1968 model that produced only 134 units. James Schrager also backs up the 268 number in his book "Buying, Driving and Enjoying the Porsche 911 and 912."

Your post asked if "this could be true" and according to the books I keep as a reference, I would have to say no.

    911 TARGA 901/14 902/0 1180001-11880268

    p30
    911 Targa -268

He does state in his footnotes"the fourth digit was used for bodyshell(i.e. 8= targa),but this description introduces confict with some of factory numbers given above"........

Frank, just an FYI that may or may not have anything to do with your situation.

When I had my RoW '89 Club Sport I was researching Club Sport VIN #'s and found some misleading info in Morgan's book. PM me for details if you are interested. The point being, not all of his info is Gospel...

    US Targas

    Frank:

I have #004 of the US Targas -- #003 sold on EBay a few months ago. It was my impression (also according to the Redbook) that 268 of the US models were produced. It would probably be easy enough to get a list of our registry members with US Targas together and see if anyone has a number higher than the figure you mentioned.
