    RS #1166 resto thread....

I thought I'd start a thread about the restoration on an RS. It seems like something you guys and gals might be interested in?....I know I would be.....

The car has been vintage raced and owned by the same guy since about 1986. The original engine had been replaced by Friesinger in about 1979.......it now has a 1975 Euro Carrera 911/83.....I know bummer. Hey at least it's not a CIS 3.0L or something....

Anyway.....the car was monumentally rusty. At some point there was talk of re-shelling. Although it certainly would have been easier.....we decided on the hard way.....

We use a Celette jig with the appropriate 911 fixtures. It's the best (only) way to get the stuff back in the right spot.

Aftermarket and some original parts needed significant modification to fit and or look correct. We found trying to make the chassis look as original as possible was much more involved than originally thought. Reshaping, drilling, filling, beating, massaging, swearing, praying......

The chassis was acid dipped because of the location of some of the rust.....it was everywhere.....

So I'll post some photos in chronological order more or less......and I'll try to keep updating as we continue.

The car will be the original Tangerine.

The front pan had already been replaced and was in the wrong spot.

A lot of aftermarket stuff is decent but doesn't fit great. The jig is VERY nice for this. We spot weld where we can......

The reproduction longitudinals are nice to have but really nowhere near correct.....Jason had to reshape a lot to fit and look right. The torsion cover bosses look goofy too so he changed them back to the originals.
