Thread: I would like to do the right thing.

I would like to do the right thing.

I posted in another thread how I recently purchased a 1971 911T Targa and was disappointed to discover that it is riddled with rust. On the upside, the car has a great running motor, a reconditioned Targa top, and factory sport seats. I bought the car for $8500 (tax and transporting included), and I'm wondering what/how is the best and most fair way to sell it. Of course I would disclose the condition of the car, but I'm wondering if selling the car whole on eBay, or parting it out for seats and motor would best get me my money back.

There seem to be some incredibly knowledgeable people here, so I'm hoping for some insight so I can move on to a truly spectacular early 911 ownership experience.

    Thanks in advance,

    -Mike

Definitely sell the sport seats first. They're worth $4,000-$6,000 for the pair, depending on their condition.

As for the rest of the car, it's up to you. You can part it out or put the thing on ebay. After selling the seats, you'll definitely make a profit on the the overall sale.

    shell?

Mike, if you could locate a rust free shell, you could transfer a lot of it over ...
considering you have the 71T motor and sports seats, wheels etc etc.
Perhaps someone knows of a shell that you could buy for a decent price.

The problem with parting it out is that I'd have to pull the car apart and deal with a lot of individual buyers.

The idea of a shell hadn't occurred to me though. It could be a fun project, but probably more expensive in the long run than buying something complete in nice shape. I'll peek around though for a good shell.

The seats in the car are in very nice condition, although I would not say they were a 10 of 10, probably a 7 of 10. They look to have been re-upholstered in the last 5 or so years.

Depending on how bad and where the rust is it may be worth doing the rust repair. Sounds like you got into it at a reasonable price with the seats, motor, prototipo, top. It will all depend on how much of a project you want to undertake. Have someone that knows these cars in your area take a look at it or post photos of the rust here. Some bad looking cars have been saved by folks on this board.

    Best to you,

    Bob
