    pedal board restoration

another little project or "how i spent my winter vacation"

most pedal boards can be repaired.
below 2 pictures of my drivers side board.
note the extensive rust on mounting plate, delaminations, wood defects, water stains and oxidized hardware.
    not pretty

    step 1

    disassemble as necessary
    repair delaminations:
separate layers with toothpicks and brush layers with yellow wood glue.
cover with wax paper and clamp securely for 24 hours.
if there are buckled areas, split them open with a razor blade and elevate edges.
apply glue and again clamp overnight.

    step 2

    repair wood defects.
if missing pieces, fashion from a donor plywood source.
1/4" birch plywood works great. you can get this at a hobby shop.
or you can purchase wood veneers at woodcraft.com
split off the layers with a sharp knife. trim fit and glue.
you could also use wood putty.

    when dry, sand thoroughly.
    stain with minwax EBONY.
coat with satin polyurethane to waterproof.

pic 2 shows several small repairs note the light areas.
also what a difference sanding makes.

    final result

    clean all hardware and install.
i think it was worth the effort.

i'm still working on replacing that mounting bracket.
i'm looking for the right rivets; part of my OCD

    Rennline

I know you are looking for originality, but has anyone tried aluminum floor boards from Rennline and can comment on their quality?

    Thanks

I hate them. I think they're absolutely ghastly and they don't have the proper provision for the pedal stop needed on the pre-76 911s with the rubber gas pedal. Ugh.

I think it's great when a DIYer takes the time to...do it themselves, documents the process and shares with the group. Plus it probably cost Bob 87 pennies for this project and he retains the original floorboard.
Well done and thanks for sharing!
