    Quick paint/undercoat question, 1972

I have no cars to look at....all in storage.

Underside of 72 hood... painted smooth? or is there paint over the texture? I know 71 is textured....

Same thing for backside of front fenders....is there a texture or undercoating on backside of front fenders?

    thanks,
    Eric

    Eric,

    What's the build date?

    Speaking of the wheel wells

I've heard of 'late' '72's finished the same way as a '73...Textured/painted/no black undercoating.

However never heard of an early '73 finished like a '72.

I'd assume the switch was somewhere pretty late in the '72 model year.

If the '72 is 'early' I belive the wheel wells would be textured/painted/and blacked (undercoated)

I beleive under the hood should be the same as a '73; textured and painted, no black undercoating.

What about factory vs dealer undercoating? When did the factory start undercoating as standard. I know the '71S I just did had factory undercoating (beige), as does my '79, but neither of my 914s had it (one had dealer (black) undercoat).

    Underside of hood

    Eric,

My 72S (#9112300508 - I don't remember the build date) is textured & painted the color of car on the bottom side of the hood and textured (undercoated) black in (all of) the wheel wells. Hope this helps.

    Dave:

Let's get together some time this summer. It would be a kick to photograph our '72 S's together and post it to the board. Mine is a Feb. 72 build as well.
