    A nice 901 upgrade

I want to make a public thank you to Tony Bray, who posts here occasionally. Tony led the way for many of us with aging 912s (480K miles on mine now!), in encouraging us by example to go to the VW Type 4 motor, as used in the 914. And then he led the way --again--showing by example how easy it is to swap the 4th and 5th gearsets from a 914 Type 901 into a 911/912 Type 901 gearbox. 914 boxes are given away these days, and they're a great source not only for miscellaneous parts like synchro parts and needle bearings, but also a fine taller gearset.

OK, so it's not a 911S. But my '66 912 has 2.2 liters of very torquey, happy-revving Type 4 happiness in it. With no experience whatsoever at digging into the 901 box, it took me a leisurely weekend to swap the 914 V and ZD top gears into my 901-02 box. WHAT A DIFFERENCE! I recommend this highly to those of you with "a little bit more than stock" power in your 911's and still using the 901 box. 75MPH is now around 3200 RPM. With the stock S-Z top gears, it ran around 4000RPM at the same speed. The makes a world of difference, cruising on the freeway. And I can tell you that when I put my foot in it, it seems to hit 100 just as fast as always, but with much less noise and drama.

    A highly recommended tweak!

    cheers

That IS good info. So top speed now goes from 120-130 to ?

Mileage and noise would be better if you drive your car a lot on the highway.....like I do with my '68.

I drove my '68 to work pretty much every day in April and May, but now am starting to taper it off, the 16mpg is killing me....my 2.2T Weber motor should get better mileage I think, but I haven't found the right tweak to get it there.

Maybe I need a foot transplant.
