At least the stamp below the tag and the stamp on the dash fascia, as well as the engine number, point to one of the 3,154 cars produced from 1/65 to 7/65 (according to the red book). The VIN on the tag is odd and doesn't correspond with a real production # does it?

Interesting. At least he is trying to be forthright:
On Jun-08-08 at 17:57:30 PDT, seller added the following information:
Second Update, some very knowledgeable Porsche enthusiasts informed me that the factory stamps the VIN in the bar below the radio and hidden behind the padded trim. I have removed the trim and found the number - as expected in confirms the 65 911 status showing #301235. You can see the images for yourself in this second apple gallery - http://gallery.mac.com/glennfearon#100052

Is that the dash number stamped on top of a "repair"? I think both the stamped dash number and stamped VIN trunk number looks odd.

The numbers on the aluminum plate look like a factory stamping. It's very odd that it is a 911 embossed plate with 911 heater numbers. I've never seen a 912 plate that showed the 911 heater numbers- they're always blank.
I find it very difficult to believe this is a factory mistake, but I guess anything is possible.
Just a couple things that I note in the photos.
1. Where are the stars that I normally see at the beginning and the end of a
number sequence in the smuggler's box stamping. Also, the # "1" has
been stamped twice.
2. The type set used on the paint code tag is different from paint code ID to
chassis number.
Not saying this is a fake car, just pointing stuff out.
Since it was first put on eBay. I think what we have is a factory error with the plate; picked up the wrong plate, one for a 912, since it had the last numbers right. Put it on the car, end of story.
Judging the seller, see no signs of ill intent. Whatever the price for a good 911 of this vintage, car has lots of small problems....should go for market though some (with reason) will be scared away. Risk looks low and it is an interesting story, novelty. If I were in the market, I'd go for it!
