    Later 901 tranny into a SWB...possible?

    I am curious if it is even possible to install a 70 911T transmission that i acquired recently for a great price (recently rebuilt too) into my 68 SWB which needs the taller gears. i thought all i had to do was change flanges but perhaps that is not enough.

    i am contemplating this so i dont have to dive into my trans although i do have the taller gears sitting on the bench, bolting on the flange and tranny is the appeal.

    I'm pretty sure it will fit, its the newer 915, trans that will have fitment problems due to clearance problems of the central tunnel, but even they will if the sheet metal is modified.

    From the Porsche Manual

    describing the changes that came with the pressure cast (magnesium housing)

    -"Taper roller bearings for the differential have been enlarged, and this has led to modifications to the differential housing, spacer rings, joint flanges and sealing rings"

    I believe this effectively precludes "mix 'n match" SWB/LWB driveshaft solutions.

    Remember the driveshaft lengths are different as are the outer wheel wheel bearings etc, so one cannot install LWB axles in SWB cars.

    70-71 trans axles are 'pull type'. Install not a big problem in addition to axle flanges you will need a different clutch cable,T/O bearing, T/O bearing fork, guide tube, and 70-71 type clutch cable guide. The nice thing is you can use latter 225MM clutch, flywheel package. I would search forum it has be discussed before. There are no clearance issues I encountered installing one in my 66.
