    Short Gears

I bought a 901 5-speed from someone on this board with A-F-M-S-X short gears and installed it into my '67 SWB. (BTW, short gears are *really* fun). Can anyone tell me if this gear set has a name, such as the term "airport gears" used in 356 circles? Could this be a standardizzed set such as "Hillclimb" ratios (901/52) or "Nurburgring" ratios (901/51)? Or just a custom build?

They sure work great at Infineon.

    Thanks,
    JohnA

Thanks, Flieger. It appears I have a 902/1. Is this what are called airport gears?

    Thanks,

The 902/1 was a standard 5 speed gear box. It really is a great match for a early 911 engine.

Since when are AFMSX short gears? AFMSX and AFMSZ are pretty much box stock on 90% of 901 longhoods. AFKQX, AEINS, AFJOT...those are short gears.

Whew! Those are short. I think they would be way too short for my car, running 15" 225/50's. My configuration sets up just right for PIR and Infineon - and around Central Oregon.

    Thanks for everyone's input.

    Cheers,

IMHO, AFMSX is a nice compromise. It's what the factory installed on the ear althoug the X 5th is not very tall for highway use. I'd prefer something a bit longer but as a good friend pointed out; "When is the last time you drove your car on the highway?"

    He had me there.

    And here I sit with a 904 mainshaft + E, K, Q, V

    Best,

Great gears! I pussed out and did AFKQX (heavily considered the V). After several thousand seat miles on this combo, I think AFKQX is the box that Porsche should have put in these cars...it still has great freeway manners. The Q to V split, though, is absolutely electric and still tolerable on the freeway, where the 'S' 5th combos are not.

My dad had the airport gears in his car, really short but a rocket- Once they got rid of the 60 series race tires we switched him to KA,Q,V. Its a good mix.

I'm switching my race car back to B,GA,KA,Q,V - from B,GA,M,S,X. Some tracks I do not shift into 5th, or it is right on the edge of shifting. The car will be much quicker.
I will miss the X gear for Cal Speedway. I will just run bigger wheels/tires or go for a "W" gear instead.
