Thread: Hello, and first official question...

Smile Hello, and first official question...

    Well,

I jumped hip deep into the Early S hobby with a great 67S driver . I have intentions to drive for now and then do a full restoration when all the needed parts are obtained. I'm excited and at the same time a bit overwhelmed.

I do use the search function extensively but cannot figure out if upper/lower Dash pads, speaker holes, vents, etc. are all the same on SWB cars. I don't even have the car home yet and I'm trying to source a dash already!

    Any help?

The potentially good news is that I may have a later style dash in very good condition (with the speaker cut out) available for someone in the future...

Lastly, is there a recommended good parts CD out there, or book, or website, etc. that I can use to verify correct parts, cross fitment, etc?

    Best regards,

    Jim

    Welcome Jim.

It's nice to see another 1967 car and owner posting here. Welcome.

Years ago Stoddard sold a hard copy in a red binder "1966 - 1968 Spare parts catalogue" it was a xerox copy of the factory parts book. The same info was available on micro fiech at the dealers and eventually on CD knock offs. If you go to Porsche web site in the technical section you will find the PET (it's the Porsche ?electronic? technical or some name like that - I'm sure someone will correct me on the name). I have borrowed a Porsche CD "Electronic Parts Catalog, 1950-2000, Euro & USA models" that has this info on it now. The parts illustrations give a complete bust out illustration of almost ever part on the car.

It's not photos of the parts but if you look close it will get you in the ballpark, this with the part number and quantity and in most cases it will give the range of cars it is used on. It's the factory parts book that was updated until about 1969 that will cover the parts for our cars. (Newer parts books versions show newer parts and different order of assembly).

When you get your car post a photo of anything and we can compare to sister cars and eventually we are building a photo library of the variations and "ranges when used" of just about every part and accessory on our cars.

There are some very knowledgeable folks on this list (who have helped me immensely) - all you have to do is ask.

Thanks for the welcome and the info. I'll be drawing on the wisdom of the group for awhile but hopefully can contribute back soon.

I was looking at this but thought a CD would be better and from your suggestion, seems I might be right:

Until I get my hands on this or something similar, any help on SWB dashes? Are they all visually and functionally the same from 1966 - 1968? Speaker holes look the same on 68 and 67 at least.

    Thanks again.

    Welcome Jim...

You are evidently a pretty smart guy. I have owned perhaps 35 Porsches over many years and my favorite one of all is my Bahama Yellow '67 SWB -- which isn't even an S (but somewhat modified). Drive it hard!

    1965-68 Dash

Jim, here is a photo of an early 1965 dash with the speaker holes that were used thru the 1968 dash. The differences are:

the early 1965 used five screws down from the top to secure the front of the dash, those screws had plastic caps over them. These are referered to as the 4 (or 5) button dash. (you can see two of those buttons in this photo).

1966-1967 have two threaded bolts that pass to the underside of the dash and have the attachment nuts access in the trunk area. (No buttons)

1968 is a two part dash, the binnacle over the gauges looks the same as in the photo (it is a separate piece), and the flat part with the speaker holes is a fiberboard (separate piece) - when it is in place it looks just like the photo. (but without the buttons).

    Does this help?

What early dash has no speaker holes? I have an original dash in my garage that has no speaker or front A/c Vent.

    Parts Information - '67 911S

    Jim,

For parts, the PET manual mentioned by Bobs 67S in the preceding post, the current Porsche Official Parts PDF Catalogue for 911/912 cars can be downloaded (5.3Mbyte) from Porsche Spare & Exchange parts website:

    https://techinfo.porsche.com/techinf...-1_KATALOG.pdf

This parts manual (604 pages) should prove quite useful, even though it states for Year 69, it does present parts for earlier SWB cars.

Another rather interesting site you may want to visit as noted in an earlier post by Paul Schooley contains many Porsche manuals that may not be as current as parts info from the Porsche website:

    http://www.cannell.co.uk/Manuals.htm

Welcome to the early 911S Registry, you’ve come to the right place for SWB 911 information.

Best of luck with your ‘new’ 911S. Now, let’s see some photos.

    Jim,

Welcome to the 'Early S'. You won't find a better site anywhere.

    Page 429 of the PET

Jim. go to the PET that JohnB gives the web address for, download and save. (You just saved yourself $80 bucks). (Thanks JohnB)

    https://techinfo.porsche.com/techinf...-1_KATALOG.pdf

Go to Page 429, it's the illustrations for the dash.
The rectangular grill insert starts with 1969.

Orange 911, I may be wrong on this, but it looks like all dash's came with the speaker holes. Even the radio delete cars. The reason for that wild assumption - it only has one part number and even the illustration indicates they are there for the complete dash - Item 5 and the replacement cover item 13 (variation for left drive and right drive but not for with holes and without). My guess is your dash was recovered some time ago. I have one with out the holes, but the vinyl is very smooth and much thicker than factory dash vinyl.
A good person on this board -Jerry Weiland in "Illinoise" has been kind enough to have had very accurate material and dead on for shape reproduction covers made, the holes are laser cut. Do a search and ask if he can make more. Tony at Autobahn interiors in San Diego can recover, too.

Yep, that all definitely helped. I'll download the info and keep my eye out for a 66-67 dash. I really dig all the facets of ownership that are already coming with this car; cool engineering, great design, suprising perfomance, and a passionate following.

Pics? Sure but...hint,hint...they've already been posted on this site . I'll be sure to add to them later this week when I get the car under my roof.

    Cheers.
