    For education:

    Originally there was no grove in the black housing, the tips on very early cars are plastic and all grey (where these are black up front and grey for the engine bay)

    Richard, yes, just to add to the collective wisdom, the black tips were plastic also. My car indeed had grey in the rear with some traces of black touch up paint as did the fronts.
