Thread: Detailing Question

    Detailing Question

Does anyone have any tricks to bringing the black plastic interior parts like the plastic ignition bezel and knobs back to black. Mine have that dried out whitish look. I've tried all the normal detailing products made for black plastic and within a week or two they are white again. Any tips?

I have never tried it on 911 parts but a trick in 356 land is to use thinner when you want to get the crazing out of the knobs. Wet it a little and than use extra fine sandpaper. The person who told me that trick is Tom Scott who is on this board on occassion as well. May be he can chime in whether this works for 911 as well?

    Patrick,

I've tried most of the products as well...
I found if the finish isn't too far gone the 303 Protectant will bring back the black with multiple applications and time:

If the finished is completely shot, start buy applying black shoe dye then work with the 303 after....

    Hope this helps,

    Cheers

I've used Mother's Back to Black with great success but I will say the shoe dye applied first is probably the best before any of those types of coatings.

    Smile Restoration Of Knobs

I have a photo album site which describes the methods I have used for 356 knobs.

I will be testing various methods for other plastic pieces such as bezels for 911's in the near future for my 1969S and I will advise the Registry when I have something to report.

    Happy hob knobing.

The door pulls on my 911 had faded to a milky grayish tone and I used 3 or 4 applications of Mothers Back to Black and they now look great. Its been several months so it lasts as well.

Tom - your results are amazing. I will try your process on some of my knobs after practicing on a spare.
