If everything checks out, a fairly inexpensive way to get into an S. Shouldn't last long at this price. Good luck with the sale.

The engine number is 4080955 which is in the appropriate range for 68 911S Targa.

Did this car start its life as a softwindow model, i.e. does it have handles or places for handles inside the targa bar. Probably not though - Don't think it looks like a conversion.

    BaT Description:

This 1968 Porsche 911S Targa was purchased by the seller eight years ago in Kentucky and driven back to his home in Berkeley, California. He intended to restore the car after his 1958 356A restoration was completed, and kept it in his garage. Unfortunately, the project stalled and it has been parked since. The car was reportedly sold new in Europe, and body modifications include fenders installed in the 1970’s and a conversion from a hard to soft-window Targa. The matching numbers 2.0-liter flat-six was rebuilt in 2009, and was recently serviced in November 2017 with a tune-up, compression test, and oil leak repairs. Some records from previous owners are included along with a Porsche Certificate of Authenticity. The car runs and drives but has some rust and has been registered as non-operational. It is being sold with a clean California title in the seller’s name.

Originally painted in Light Ivory (6804), the car was repainted black by a previous owner some time ago. Front fenders from a 1969 911 and the flared metal RS rear fenders were reportedly installed in Germany sometime in the 1970s, and the car was converted from a hard window Targa to a soft window example presumably after it was imported to the US. The provided COA denotes a defroster rear window and a vertical defroster grid is included in the sale. Rust is present on the body, and there are some bubbles and cracks where filler was not applied properly.

Emissions regulations prohibited the sale of the 911S in the US market for 1968, and the car features many one-year only exterior parts and trim. The seller has fitted refurbished 15″ Fuchs measuring 6″ up front and 7″ out back. The wheels wear Yokohama AVS ES100 tires.

Inside, the original black leatherette upholstery with Mouse Grey corduroy inserts was replaced with black leather at some point. All door and targa top seals are said to require replacement. A wood-rimmed Porsche steering wheel was added by the seller, and a Pioneer head unit has been installed. The odometer shows 44,868 kms (27,880 miles).

Engine is #4080955. The 2.0-liter flat-six engine is paired to 901 5-speed manual gearbox, and was good for 160 hp when new. The motor was rebuilt approximately 6K miles ago in May of 2009 by the previous owner. In November of 2017, the seller repaired a leaking valve cover and rear pulley. The oil leak has been repaired, but some oil that leaked into the heat exchanger needs to be removed and cleaned. A tune-up was also performed, and a test taken at that time showed engine compression was 160, 160, 155, 170, 165 and 160 respectively. The seller notes that stainless steel exhaust system was added at some point by a previous owner. Several photographs showing the condition of the undercarriage are featured.

The Porsche Certificate of Authenticity shows the serial number and confirms the car’s build date, colors, and options. Service records from previous owners are limited, though the invoices for the engine rebuild are included.
