    '68 cam tower question

I recently took apart the top end on a '68 longblock I have. The rockers are the cast "no bushing" type, and the cam towers suffered some slight scoring damage from some of the cast rocker material that was stuck to the hardened rocker shaft upon removal. In other words, there was nothing that could have prevented this.

I was planning on reusing the cam towers, getting the rocker shafts polished, and then having the rockers themselves rebushed. Then, upon assembly, I was going to use RSR seals to prevent leaks.

I also talked to Walt at Competition Engineering and he said that I could use some sealant inside the rocker bores upon assembly to further prevent any leaks. I am thinking Curil would be good for this. Any thoughts? I'm not talking about boogering up the ends of the rocker bolts with RTV, just some slight sealant on the rocker shaft upon assembly.

I want to keep this engine rebuild as low buck as possible, it most likely will be an 81x66 motor with Solex cams, stock '68 normal heads, SSI's and J&E S pistons in reconditioned Birals.

    Thanks for any thoughts.

Cam towers are cheap, why take a chance that the buggered area will leak?

It's not like its a centerlube tower or something.

How much for a used cam tower? They are the same from 67 to 77, correct?

I am worried that if I buy used ones they may just be in the same condition, also.
