    License Plate Questions

Back in the day on factory race/rally cars, did the license plate generally stay with the car thru-out its life? Also, what is the letter designation mean? Many started with 'S-Txxxx'. Does this refer to a county or region in Germany?

Finally, how were the plates mounted? In most restored cars they seem to use a sticker. But in period fotos, many of the plates appear to be riveted directly to the hood. Were sticker plates ever actually used?

    Curt,

The 'S' at the beginning of the plate stands for Stuttgart.

Here's a full list of the other letter/city designations:

In factory photographs you often see BB (Baden Baden) and LB (Ludwigsburg) as well.

This is a photo of a Porsche European front license plate mount adapted to an American plate. The adaptation, by the way, was to drill some holes in a novelty license plate (which is expendable) to attach to the Euro mount. The American plate mounts to the holes in the novelty plate.

Sorry, I can't find a part number for the mount.

What I do know is only in the UK the plate stays on the car during its whole car life.
Thats why often UK "barn find" cars still have their original plates on even the car was off the road i.e off registred for a very long time.
Factorys do have special factory plates either with special prototype/race plates or special clients plates they can sometimes use for several cars. Porsche press cars always showed special plates too.

In most European countrys one would loose the plate ID when selling the car i.e newly registred by new owner.
Almost all have a county, city or region system either with number code (France), letters (Germany) or two digit letter code (Swiss). In Switzerland, you do can run several cars with one single plate ID (but driving only one car at a time..).

Yes it is a champagne yellow 1965. Photographically, it suffers from the shoemaker's child syndrome: when I take car photos I tend to photograph the other cars. But, I do have other photos of it. I'll send you a private message.

Dave Newhardt photgraphed it for Porsche 911: Perfection by Design http://www.amazon.com/Porsche-911-Pe...7025019&sr=1-2 which is now available in paperback.
