    WTB - vent windows

I'm looking for vent window frames for my 1969 911. I know, 69 didn't have vent windows. I live in the desert and it is really hot.

My understanding is that my 69 has clear anodized aluminum trim and the same was used on the 68s so I guess I'm looking for 68 vent windows.

    Thanks!

It's my understanding that you need both the vent windows (duh) and the frames.

    frames and vent windows

My car has the frames and fixed windows, factory tinted. I think I'm looking for the frames and the vent windows. I think the door glass is interchangeable but I'm not sure about the vent glass. If the vent glass is interchangeable, then I'd just need the frames with the vents, no glass.

    N eat Car!

Here's a series of photos showing what you will need and what it'll look like when you're done.

    1. Window frames, because the structural piece at the bottom of the vent window is shaped differently than the later models without vent windows and has a hole for the shaft of the vent-window to pass through and nutserts for the bracket to connect the central vertical piece to the door-frame. That'll require the correct brackets and original hardware which you might want to re-plate, because it'll probably be rusty when you find it....remember they only made this for one year, in '68. This stuff is celebrating it's 40 ieth birthday. See detail photos #2 & #3.

    2. The vent-window frames, and NO the glass is not interchangable so you will need the glass, complete latches, and pivot point castings for the main door frames. The vent-window frames have the other part of the pivot point soldered into them and are not removable. The roll-up main window glass is the same and can be retained.

    3. All these parts are handed, in other words you will need the correct number of right-hand pieces and the same number of left-hand pieces.

    4. I would not consider this change without installing new felt window channels and rubber gaskets for the vent windows. Most of what you need is available from EASY in Emeryville CA or Partsheaven in Hayward, CA, two of the best Porsche only salvage yards in the country.

I thought I had the only long wheelbase car around with vent-window equipped doors, but by pure co-incident , today I visited Canepa Design in Scotts Valley, CA and came across this track car, also a LWB car with the exact '68 door-frame / vent-window arrangement that you're talking about.....so you know it can be done, all you have to do is bring money. (For refinishing of the anodized frames and other aluminum parts there is really only one scource: Ano-Brite in LA, CA at www.anobrite.contact/html
Bring much more money for that part of the operation.

    Best of luck

    parts infor

Thank you, John, for the info and the tips. I think I have my fall project!

I had some of those flakes that you cast in garage floor epoxy paint leftover and I used the flakes in the stripes and numbers. Still sorting out some electrical issues but the car corners like a go-cart. The engine is a 67 that belonged to a regional racer so it is a bit beefed up.

Also, the 68 wings and clamp attachments are different than the 65-67 so if you try to source individual pieces you need to make sure the frames and wings are of the same type. If I recall correctly the pivot shaft of the 68 and later wings are shorter. One easy way to tell is the retaining groove in the shaft. 68 and later (Targa wings) grooving is wider and deeper. They are retained by the clamp that you can see in John's photo. The earlier wings use a ring clip.

I do have a 68 set that I have no use for and that I could sell. What is a set selling for? Do you need the vent glass as well since they are actually part of a set of tinted windshields.
