Thread: Screens in case under crank

    Screens in case under crank

I took off two screens from inside my '68 case under the crank. Is it necessary to put these back in? They seem pretty fragile now, especially the plastic around the screen edges, and I'm thinking they may create more future problems if plastic chips off the edges.

I assume these are some kind of windage tray.

    Thanks.

They are not needed. Ditch 'em.

The purpose is to keep the oil from sloshing up and hitting the crank, robbing power. If you do the oil bypass mod the oil level in the case is reduced, making this (hopefully) less of an issue.

I left the screens out in my case. They are NLA anyway.

Thanks for the responses guys. I searched over at Pelican and found a trove of information also recommending to omit them. Seems that these were only used on the early motors and were ditched later.

It just seems like an odd part for Porsche to put inside a motor, with the fragile screen and plastic and all. Seems like a time bomb waiting to go off. All the windage trays I've ever seen were sheet metal.

This is the most extensive thread that I found on Pelican, http://forums.pelicanparts.com/showt...ghlight=screen, and it doesn't settle the issue, for me.

I am sure that my 72 had the screen, and that it is gone in my 73.

I think that the crankcase casting changed with the 7R case to make the screen superfluous, because a windage tray, of sorts, is cast into the 7R.

    Anyone know for sure?

    Screens in case under crank

There is also a possibility that they were originally thought to be needed to deareate the oil. but due to case internal changes and better oil they were deleted. Don't know this for a fact, just has always been a supposition on my part.

There's an updated piece that you can use, which is also NLA. I happened to find one on eBay a few years ago. It has a sheet metal portion with an opening for the oil pick-up and a cylindrical steel mesh surrounding the metal portion. I'll see if I can find a picture and post it.

Hmmm...interesting piece. It might decrease windage at the oil pump itself, but it would not prevent oil whipping off the crank aerating any excess oil at the sump that was outside of that piece.
