    Early Gearbox number records - Anyone?

    All,

    Does any one know of a website or a page of a book they have and could scan for me that shows 911 gearbox numbers used from start until the start of 65? - numbers, the gearbox type and possibly correlating vin no's?

    901/0 Transmisson numbers

    Hi Craig,
    The transmissions put into the production cars were 901/0 five speed starting with 100 001 from September 1964 and was this series until Jul 1965. (The little white tech spec book).

    The sequencing of car numbers to transmission number is random. The first 10 cars assembled had a total of 17 transmissions used prior to leaving the factory.

    There was a very strong testing program and just about every car could be called upon to have a teardown and review prior to it's release to the dealers and customers. As a result some transmissions were installed into more than one car.

    By January 1965 the trans numbers were up into the #100 253 range but totally random with the next car having trans #100 167.

    The transmissions were in the #101 470's by June 1965.

    A few years into ownership of his 1964 car Whit Tharin, original owner of car 300 064 had driven over 100,000 miles and fouth gear went out, he took it to his dealer and they discover it is transmission # 100 008. (Warranty was about 10K miles at that time.) After a conversation, the factory wanted the gear back and the new gear and transmission rebuild - was on their nickel. Porsche was very interested in the failure and thanked Whit for his testing....
    Buy the mid 1980's Whit had put on well over 300K miles on the car and it has now passed on to his son, Dan Tharin. (For the record - #064 was just the fourth 911 made - Nov 12 1964 - and it's transmission had been installed in a previous car in September 1964)

    That's Great Bob,

    Since you know your stuff - Can you help me further?: My Car is vin no 302654, Engine 902912 and on the kardex the gearbox no is 224328-901/0. The car vin is fine and it has its original engine but the gearbox is a 915. Accordign to the kardex the car was built 29.10.65 original rhd / sunroof and delivered to Australia 31.12.65.

    Can you please offer comment on the original gearbox no? It seems a high no to be a 901/0 number? It seems a 902/1 no but why does the kardex say it is a 901/0?

    The gearboxes I have found that are the closest to that no are:
    237914 (I Think this is a 902/1)
    221831 (I think this is a 902/1) also
    160827 (I think this is a 902/0)
    100634 (901/0)

    Which do you suggest I fit into the car to make it as original as possible?

    Do you have any info on early cars? I am interested in the following:

    My car is one of how many australian RHD delivered cars in 65?
    How many early sunroof cars were made?
    Do you know what number RHD car mine may be?
    How many early RHD Cars were produced?
    Is my car historically signifigant?

    Craig,

    Your car most likely did come w/ a 901/0 box since 302898 (16.11.65 built) came w/ such a box.

    I would go for 100634 w/ the 901/0 ratio.

    Craig,
    there are two school of thought on this: as Richard said match the type number and within a month or so of other cars. (The advantage is performance will match similar period cars).

    The second is to get as close to the number on the case/Kardex.

    (Finding a 902/1 numbered box with 901/0 stamping seems like a long shot.)

    Influencing factors:
    (1)
    The 901/0 has a gearing of AA GA OUY (great all around and a top end of 142mph). The 902/1 is slightly lower gears AFMSX, so the engine winds up faster and the top end is about 133mph. Seat of the pants feel would be the 902/1 is quicker.
    (2)
    As a reference - numbers of the 902/1 was inclusive of 220 001 - 221 721 to 26 Jul 65. So by deduction your original trans number of 224 328 is in alignment for the later part of the year 1965
    (3)
    A similar engine transmission combination is within 400 numbers of your engine - it is engine#902 556 and 902/1 trans #223 057. (within 400 numbers of your engine but 1300 away from your trans ???)
    (4) The serial number of your transmission "seems" at odds to the type. But in the charts of transmission application are notes of "special order at extra cost" so if an owner wanted a higher/lower gearing he could pay for it....

    Get a copy of the little white book: 4203.20 "Porsche 912 911 911T 911L 911S Technical specifications" - with information Cut-Off 31 December 1967. Your dealer or pelican has them. Most of the info here is quoted from it.

    Having the original Kardex is your greatest asset.

    Finding another box within your serial number range 224xxx and a type 901/0 seems very unlikely, but ask around - we never know what's out there.

    These are the frustrations of our passion, we know what a car should be and we know what our limited options are...weighing all this I would (for some unknown reason - oh - it would feel faster) pick Transmission #221 831 (2500 away for the number and a different type - but (to me) it seems closer than the other options - given the same question tomorrow - I could pick the type first....)
