Engine Compartment light

So what is the story on these? I've had one floating in my stash a of parts and have no idea where they were installed. I've never seen one on a car. Does anyone have one in their car. Is there a difference between black and all chrome? Would it be appropriate to have one in my 1965 911? (It would have been appropriate when I was teenager in my 1959 Triumph TR3 at night when I was trying to spray compressed alcholol into the carbs to get it to start.)

Funny timing. I just measured my friend's mid eighties car yesterday for placement of the light. These are still available from Stoddard but they are all black (body and base). They are around $50.
I wanted one since early this year when I saw one on Ahearn's former sports purpose 68L. Luckily an early chrome version one became available on this board and I snatched it up. It cleaned up really well.
I plan to install it in my car. The measurement between the latch and the light is 2 5/8". See pic of Ahearn's car. I haven't figured out how to wire it.

I found pics from my second viewing of the car. Took additional reference pics since I actually had a light.
I notice different wire colors from yours and the one mounted. I haven't figured out which relay to tap into. Seems to me there should be a switch like the under the hood lights.

EDIT: If the wiring of the installed light is grey and white then it should be for the parking lights. This would make sense if there was a switch like the under the hood lights. Or maybe opening/closing the light door is the switch. Piggy back off the parking light? I don't know.

So is there a backing plate that clamps it from the back? so you've seen them on something as early as a 68? Maybe it would be appropriate on an early 65. I could chrome it with other parts...

It would make sense if the engine compartment light was activated with the parking light instead of with the rear lights.
