    Richard, on another post today http://www.early911sregistry.org/for...ad.php?t=22514

    this link below was given
    http://www.elferhelfer.de/fzident.htm#
    so according to it, 11805060 would be
    11= Typ 911
    then
    8= Modell 68

    then the next digit determines model, in your case 0 ...

    0= S Coupe,1= L Coupe,2= T Coupe,3= Coupe,5= S Targa,6 = L Targa,7 = T Targa,8= Targa ,

    then a note in german which says for last 4 digits, "sequential series with four digits, if beginning with "5", then one of Karmann prod. body"
    "fortlaufende Nummer 4-stellig,falls beginnend mit "5", dann eine von Karmann prod. Karosserie."

    11= Typ 911
    8= Modell 68
    0= S Coupe
    5= Karmann prod. Karosserie
    060= sequential number

    Karl beat me to the punch!

    Richard - it's a '68 911L USA model :

    11 = 911

    8 = '68

    0 = Coupe (5=Targa)

    5 = L USA model ( 0= S)

    XXX = serial number

    It's a bit more complicated than that (4th & 5th digit) but that's a simplified explanation.

    We seem to have some disagreement here - the Porsche Technical Specifications booklet I've just looked in states:

    911 L USA 11 805 001 - (Porsche-built Coupe)

    911 S (not imported to USA) 11 850 001 - (Targa)

    911 S (not imported to USA) 11 800 001 - (Porsche-built Coupe)

    Paternie's Red Book states that, 'The fourth digit was the production version. In 1968, this fourth digit had the following designations:

    0 = S Coupe
    1 = 911 Coupe
    3 = US 911 Coupe
    5 = S Targa
    6 = L Targa
    7 = T Targa
    8 = US Targa'

    I misread the (tiny) print in the Tech Specs booklet & have amended my previous post ...

    Incidentally, I don't think Karmann built any of the bodyshells for S models did they ?
