Thread: RSR wheel

    RSR wheel

I needed a wheel for my 71S under resto, so I took up Cornpanzers challenge. I bought a 914/6 wheel, a horn button, leather, felt, needle and tread. I have done a RS wheel before, but I wanted the RSR look and thickness. Lot of swering, but pleased with the result.

BTW its leather, on top of felt(glued to the original leather), on top of original leather, on top of hard plastic.

    Thanks to:

    Dr911E for providing the 380mm 914/6 wheel
    Cornpanzer for providing the instruction

The guy I bought the horn button from(sorry cant remember who)

Nice result. Just about to try this myself.
Do you mind sharing a few things?

What type/thickness of felt did you go for?
Did you stick it in one piece to the wheel same shape as the leather or several pieces?
    What glue did you use?
Did you cut the leather out from a template?
    What leather did you use?
How close is it to the original?
What thread and what size needle did you use?
Were did you do your first stitch in relation to the wheel?
Did you fold over the edges of the leather at the six o'clock position and butt them together?

    Many thanks for any tips.

    Regards
    Mike

    Hi Mike

    I will try to answer:

What type/thickness of felt did you go for?

Black felt about 2,5 mm thick

Did you stick it in one piece to the wheel same shape as the leather or
    several pieces?

One piece, glued it in a 2cm glue strip around the outer edge of the wheel. The rest of the felt I did not glue so it could stretch a bit, but Cornpanser glued the hole piece, might be best.

    What glue did you use?

Its a multipurpose textile glue called Casco contact glue. It’s a little rubbery when dry. You can also use 3M 90 spray glue like Cornpanzer.

Did you cut the leather out from a template?

No, bought it from AlanGun. I had to trim the pieces going out on the spokes a little and make new holes to get it tight enough. next time I will make my own.

    What leather did you use?

I am not sure, but its colored through, not just painted. Its seems to be of quite good quality.

How close is it to the original?

    Don’t know!

What thread and what size needle did you use?

the tread is a high strength "button" tread. I when to a hobby shop and asked for the toughest thin tread they had. its thicker than normal sowing tread.

Bended needle, not sure of size

Were did you do your first stitch in relation to the wheel?

I started at 6 o'clock, when to the left all the way to the last spoke at 4pm. The from 6 o'clock to the right up to the spoke where I stopped going the other way. At this pint I was able to pull/massage and twist the leather around the hole wheel(using force) to smooth it out. Then I did the last spoke, had to trim a bit. Stitch as tight as you dare.

Did you fold over the edges of the leather at the six o'clock position and butt them together?

It was already stitched together. But the end of the spokes was not good so I did like Cornpanser and cut them thin and folded them to get a nice edge. I did not have a special tool like he did, so I used a sanding bit on a drill to make it thin!
