It is one of the circa fifty RHD first 500 series RS — it was photographed when competing in 74 Circuit of Ireland; an M472 Touring. Front near side suspension damaged near end of five day event so decision was made to try to get to finish. Delicately balanced on three wheels by a very committed navigator Tennent bravely sitting on the bonnet his foot/leg wedging in place the front near side wheel using a bonnet mounted lamp, it seems? Being a RHD car the codriver position maybe an attempt to help “tripod” weight distribution, but not too great for driver O’Kane’s visibility.

Last year I bought a job lot of early RS nos spares
that had been stored away for decades at the garage where it and a few other RS were prepared for the events back in those days.

The driver’s place, normally a Hillman Roots Dealer but was well known to do rally prep for the event on seventies ………pictured here with four genuine Carreras prepared there for a mid 70s Circuit of Ireland by their respected spanner man Patsy (second from right). Plates all clear except AUI1500 ( left) long before the many well known incidents including heavily crashed, rolled and burned at Kyalami.

Incidentally if memory serves me well both the RHD M472 first 500 series RHD cars have M650 and 651 on this an international rally. The 74 Carrera pictured is one of the rare RHD model 74 RS this white one being
originally the Porsche cars Great Britain / AFN car supplied for Nick Faure race on circuits.
after his prodsports championship win in the previous 2.7 RS also supplied by the U.K. importer. Name: 26A8859C-46D4-4236-9992-CF9EA81FC89D.jpg

Somewhere I have a photo of Nick and I together looking over the nearly complete AUI1500 shortly before it was generally known that it would arise phoenix like from the ashes of the Kyalami incident.

I knew the place on Ireland was no longer doing work on Carreras had reverted to Roots Chrysler many decades back but through my grapevine discovered that they still had some NOS RS spares from those activities back in the day so I cleaned them out.

Note example of period team rally jacket as worn by Gillespie (far right). I’ve been in touch with Hunziker who reproduced them and some other team wear of that era — I like that this version is the burgundy with white similar hue to the service literature— they were made in U.K. late 60s / 70s but less commonly seen so less known about them than than the eye catching lime green / lighter red combos of similar style

Spoken to Hunziger who reproduced them for Porsche about one I have.
I didn’t get mine from the place on Ireland it is an original U.K. made jacket per the article, not a made by Hunziger repros

Contemporary report describes how it was nearly a win for this first 500 series RS of December 1972 build until a rear suspension problem arose again late in event ….

Coincidentally, I have these road books from 911 Waldegaard drove when he returned to compete in a factory built rally 911 in the 2005 classic event — the 911 used was by then owned by a friend and prepared / supported during the classic event by another friend. Latter was crew chief and gave me his road books from the event.

It still covered in dust from Goodwood FOS rally stage demo runs and caught up with “Foubie”, the former managing editor of Autosport who had started his career on the rally desk of Autosport, before rising becoming CEO of Haymarket worldwide. I called him at very short notice to say we were on our way as he worked in that area so he just downed tools and popped down to meet us — he arranged for photos of the the 911 still on livery from classic event to be taken in front of the clubhouse fountain for a newsletter he was publishing. The 911 was originally a London to Sydney factory 911 iirc.

Rally was his first love and always remained his passion despite rising to top job — had some fun stories over afternoon tea on the Fountain terrace — sadly he died of heart attack not long after; very sadly missed.

Gratuitous British / Irish registered RHD 73 RS international rally action in 1974 running among Escorts, Alpine etc - in one case of third series RHD M471 Sport with licence plates AUI1500 winning the international rally.

The song at around 16 minutes is by singer songwriter Phil Coulter who owned the RS with licence plate PMC134L The subject of the song CB wins in RHD RS AUI 1500

There were very roughly 100 RHD RS made to c16 EG British market spec during 1973 and a reasonable percent were when new pressed into action on 73/74. HughH has a nice thread with many details.

    Enjoy
