Porsche has released many, great high definition images of the 1973 Carrera RS for its 50th anniversary. Here is one of my favorites. None of them are captioned, so I leave those identification to the experts.

    https://media.porsche.com/mediakit/9...haracteristics

There are three galleries that can be downloaded. This image is from the “On the Road.” Collection.

Rally report from motoring news. For those not familiar a tabloid sized newspaper in the U.K. . MN was a format that used to bring reasonably up to date motorsport info to us through our letterbox in the days long before www. Nice complementary publication to Autosport and Motor Sport. Unfortunately I found the tabloid format and frequency too awkward and flimsy to keep so most got thrown — so lots went in dustbin as following edition arrived.

Never met Jack Tordoff but my cousin is married to a professional footballer (soccer — not the other one where don’t actually kick ball much) who in 70s played for the club where Tordoff was the long-time chairman. Chatted to him about his former boss who he described as tough but very supportive of his players. I don’t know obviously but did cross my mind that being a competitor in International rallying perhaps Mr Tordoff understood the competitor’s challenges better than some chairmen who are just business investors who might not have ever experienced participating in a sport first hand?

Lot of RHD 73 RS used as pretty competitive out of box for the type of rally over in Ireland so while expensive ( £6-7k iirc so about twice price of etype jag) the Porsche didn’t need much more than the safety equipment unlike the Escort that required more investment both prep and to run. Cathal Curley went down this approach but putting his privatly bought and entered Carrera on its roof

a couple years later on a different Irish rally event probably didn’t help deliver that theoretically more cost effective business case — AUI1500 had a very hard life! It was a late third series M471sport — one of the last RHD made— so one small consolation being it’s original steel panels were by thicker guage regular production ones ( not thin gauge RS homologation specials that no longer existed).

Tordoff put a 73 Carrera in a ditch in another event I seem to recall but for repairs he had the advantage of a long-standing ownership of Porsche official dealership in Leeds England named per the registration plate JCT600.

That's a great picture. Skinny tires with ST flares. Skinny is better in the snow.

John Sprinzel (and David Stone?) in ex Waldegård car on a registration plate Sprinzel had long associations with

    And with different codriver:

Sprinzel well known for BMC such as Healey Sprite won British rally championship. Did Monte plus other rallys. Organised the London to Mexico rally of 1970 with 96 entrants from 22 countries to start from Wembley Stadium for World Cup triumph a 38-day, 16,000-mile event through 19 countries including a sea crossing from Lisbon to Rio de Janeiro, and ending up at Mexico City’s Azteca stadium where the 1970 final would be played.

Also was circuit racer in places like Sebring where had a class win

His businesses included founding Speedwell whixh among others involved Graham Hill.
    https://mk1-performance-conversions.co.uk/spdhist.htm
He bought the Healey Speed Equipment Division from Donald Healey .

Well regarded among peers but a somewhat overlooked talent
At one time owned a smart mews garage in central London and a Porsche franchised dealer until around 1974
    when he retired

He also had rallied in 356 but better known for BMC where one of his codrivers was a young Stuart Turner who went on to a very successful management career for several OEM works motorsport divisions.

In summary a successful and diverse motorsport career of man who seemed to embrace life that included sailing windsurfing beyond racing until died aged 90.

Link to another site with information on the 1970 World Cup rally that started form Wembley Stadium in London to the stadium in Mexico. Note John Sprinzel involvement in organising it.

There were a few 911 entrants but these don’t appear to have featured prominently in the results.
