Thread: tires for 7R rims

    tires for 7R rims

I just purchased two 7R rims for the rear of my 1970 S.

I am using deep sixes in the front with the Michelin XWX 185/70/15 tires. The tires are made in 185, 195, 205 and 215 sizes. Does anyone know what would be a good fitting size for the rear? I have 185's on the deep six rear rims now and can use them on the 7R rims. Do I want to go to a larger size such as the 195 or 205? Some have advised that the 205's may rub. The car is lowered about one inch all around.

Further, should I move away from the OEM Michelin tire so I can use 60 or 65 series tires on the car?

Those Michelins cost a fortune. So, I must make sure that if I use them that I selet the correct size. They will not take them back after mounting.

    Thanks for the help.

If you should decided to not go with your Michellins please let me know as I would be interested in purchasing them.

    7R with Michelin XWX 185/70-15

The XWX 185-70 will look great on the 7R rim. I would just take them off the deep sixes and re-mount them on the 7Rs.

The XWX IMHO has the best looking side wall of any tire made (even a 275 GTB4 looks decent when wrapped around a nice set of XWXs from M. Bibendum) and is period correct for your C series S.

As you point out, they also lack the stigma of low cost! And, 185-70 is the OE size.

You should not encounter rubbing and so avoid the nausea inducing paint blistering so often experienced when fitting over-sized rubber.

    7R on SWB

    Check this link:

I cannot speak from experience but Henry Garazo started the above thread not too long ago that should prove interesting.

Our 67 SWB has 205/60s (Bridgestone Potenza 950) on deep sixes and they don't rub. However, the sidewalls bulge on the rim and don't look too good to me aesthetically.

Ahhhh the sixties... I envision myself one early Saturday morning wearing plaid shorts, black shoes with white socks smoking a cigarette heading to the hardware store to buy a bag of nails.
SWB cars are an acquired taste however once acquired theirs no turning back.

I agree the xwx is a great tire. I have them on a 70S, and in case it helps on my sleeper 71T with deep 6s and 7Rs I run 195/65s up front and 205/60s on the rear. The stance looks like.....

215/60x15 will get you the closest to the original diameter at a cost,
fender rub no doubt, my 205's will if I drive hard, and price.

A 185/70 on a 7" rim will perform differently than on your 6" deep sixes as the side wall will be held more vertically firm by the increase in width and actually apply more tire contact patch.

And they will look OK (cool)!

If you are using the same size tire as on your Deep 6's, why bother? Sell the 7R's and buy a new TV

Here's my old '71S with 195/65 on Deep Six front and 215/60 on 7R rears. Used 5 mm spacers on the front and 15 mm spacers on the rear and had no fender rub.
