    Introduction and another wheel question

Hi everyone. My name is Bob Allen and have been a several year lurker on these boards. I was lucky enough to reacquire my father's old 1971 911S a few weeks ago from the enthusiast who purchased it from him. It took me by surprise as he kept his word that he would give me first right of refusal if he ever sold it.

This is a silver/black 1971 911S with 43k original miles and original paint. It was purchased originally in Pennsylvania and has lived its life on the east coast.

    The Vin: 9111301340
    Engine: 6311831
    Build date 6/71 (from doorjam)

It has an unusual deviated color (black) aluminum license plate panel. When we purchased it in 1988 from the original owner it had 6 & 7 in black center fuchs, i guess from a 911SC or early carrera. It drove and handled very well from my admittedly foggy memory.

My question is the last owner swapped out 6 in flat fuchs with M&S tires from another car he had. These wheels need refinishing to compliment the condition of the rest of the car and I would like it to handle a little better. I think I would like to return it to its original wheel package.

Finally my question: Would it be possible for this car to have been delivered with deep dish wheels at the end of 1971? I have read other posters who believed there was a switch over to the newer flat fuchs in 3/71. The reason for my question is that this car has what appears to be an unused spare deep dish wheel (I know this was present when we purchased the car in 1988) Would the factory use 2 different wheel types?

Thanks for any help. I'll try to get better pics up soon.

I'm thinking 'not' on the deep dishes in late 71...at least from what I've read up on but of course as with everything Porsche things are possible. This is a job for the fuch police

Well, first off it's your car, and congrats on getting it back!

I've personally seen 4/71 flat fuchs, what's the build date on the car (get the kardex)? I guess theoretically deep fuchs are possible if they were laying around at the factory. The fact that you have a deep as a spare is interesting, pull the date off of it.

I like deep 6's myself, and would rather have those on the car if it were mine, it's not like someone's going to tell you they are wrong for the model year.

    Bob,
I believe the dividing date for the changeover to flat sixes is 24 March 1971.
I will double check the workshop manual date later to confirm.
My chassis number is 0760 completed(I think)1 March 1971 with deep sixes.
    MORE pics,pls !!

    HTH,
    Dennis.

I like the look of the deep sixes better as well. I will pull the serial number and date off the spare this weekend. Perhaps that will give a clue if it is the real spare.

Can I trust the build date on the doorjam tag?

I just got the COA today. It is pretty useless except it states the car came with optional pirelli's. This would not have any effect on the wheels though, right?

    thanks,

    Bob
