    reverse gear grind

    I have been having problems getting into reverse clean. I grind in and the sound is killing me. If I go into a few gears first, I get in a bit cleaner, but there is still contact. It sounds like something is spinning and by making contact I am slowing it down, until it stops and I can get in.

    All other gears go clean except the occassional grind into second. Anyone have ideas on what is making this happen?. Further, I have read that the shifting on a 1970 911 S was not the best. If that is true is there anything I can do to make the shifting more direct?

    Be sure your clutch is adjusted properly. Reverse is very sensitive to the slightest engagement of the clutch.

    Once your linkage is adjusted, check that your synchros aren't worn out.

    Easy way to test, is to put the car in neutral, hit the throttle (to spin up the gears in the transmission) and then put it in gear. If you hear a crunch your synchros are most likely worn out.

    I understand, there is no synchro for reverse. I had this problem with my push style clutch and had the clutch adjusted. The grinding went away when I was completely stopped. (I still put it in 1rst before going to R).

    Thanks guys for the replies.

    Joe, your information was very helpful and makes perfect sense. You are dead on. There is no reverse synchro. As I do not grind gears 1-5, it makes no sense that syhchros are the issue.

    Off to the shop for a cable adjustment.
