    1972 911 Mirrors

    Hi guys,

Another question forgive my ignorance, yet again.

Are the mirrors the durrant round ones or the rectangle flag ones, when exactly did the change over occur.

    Cheers

I have the flag mirror on my January, 72 car. I am not sure when the actual date for the change over occurred.

    hi Bill,

Thanks for help, I noticed you 911 is gold, Mine is currently red but originally mine was gold too.....once all the hard work of getting it road worthy and registered, thats the next step, i will return my 911 back to its original colour.....time and money, but i will get there.

Another quick question can the mirrors be swapped, by that i mean will the left hand mirror work on the right hand side ?

    cheers

No , the mirror is not interchangeable and no passenger side mirror was available or correct until around '77?
The factory access holes in the door on the right side are for right hand drive cars, if you place a mirror there it won't be placed properly for visibility from the left hand driving position.

    Clayton:
Here is a picture of my car to keep you encouraged. I was repainted about 1976. The color is a little on the yellow side. Good luck with your restoration.

    Thanks Bill,

Its great inspiration for me, I am most probably having some time off shortly due to "gardening leave" ( due to leaving to work for a competitor ) Which will hopefully also give me the necessary funds to complete the car shortly.

    Cheers

I found out today an interesting fact, which helped to clear my confusion over the mirrors. Apparently in the USA the flag mirrors came in 1972, while good old Aussie land down under they didn't start appearing to late 1973.

Actually Clayton we never got rectangular mirrors they all had round durants to the best of my knowledge. It was 74 year model, hence late 1973, when rectangular mirrors became standard. Mostly they were larger than the ones your referring to anyway

Your car should have a large round durant mirror one side only and they are definately not interchangable you can't see jack .... on the passenger side mirror unless you mount it in a strange place further rearward on the door.

I think that for my72 most of the cars got the larger durant mirror, but the smaller "rs" flag mirror was already available as well (at least in the german home-market). Here are a couple of official porsche ads from "Auto motor und sport" of October 1971:

    No wonder i was confused,

My car is actually from California and is a left hooker, the mirrors have since been replaced with some after market black plastic junk things.

It currently has two mirrors, so I was thinking flag or durant to be historical correct I thing it is the flag mirrors, but for the short term i may put on the durant ones.......and in future replace them with the correct type.
