Engine Overhaul

I have found a nice rust free '73 car that requires a full engine overhaul.

What do I need to budget for a stock overhaul of a 2.4T. Also, can u recommend anyone in the LA/San Diego area that can rebuild the motor?

It would be best to budget for around 10K +/-. The reality is that it could easily get out of hand depending on shop labor rate, if you split the bottom end, and whatever hard parts you might need (i.e. case work, Ps and Cs, valves, guides, keepers, springs, bearings, etc.).

I recommend that you work closely with the shop to figure out exactly what the engine needs and what it doesn't need. There are places you can cut costs and places you can't - a good mechanic can help guide you.

Besides Marco's good points I would like to add that the term "Rebuild" means many diffrent things to diffrent people. "Make it run again for once and awhile putting around" or "as new or better" will change the price considerabley, for example new timing chains and guides are a common part of a "rebuild" and that works fine alot of the time but any body who has played with drive chains, like on a dirt bike, knows that the chain and sprockets wear out togeather and putting new chains on worn sprokets will cut the life of the chains considerably so do you replace just the chains and guides for $120? or the chains guides and sprokets for $1200? depends on how the engine will be used and how wore out your stuff and how well and long you want it to run. So that is why the numbers are all over the place. Best case "fresh up" $3500.
Good shop, replate and repaint every thing rebuild MFI, Starter, Alt., linkage etc to "as new or better" condition $20,000 Plus.
but on average around $10,000 does it.
