    901 Shift Linkage

    I have a 1971 and a 67 S. The 67 has about 2 inches more of travel from 1st
to 2nd gear. It has new bushings and about the same amount of play in the
linkage, Any thoughts on shortening the travel? The 71 is stock.
    Thanks,

I wasn't aware a '67 901 was different from a '70 901 in the shift linkage area. Please let me know if it is.

I'm thinking the '70 shift housing will bolt into the 67 chassis and work. Try it. It's merely a few bolts. If that works, then you have a couple of options:

    1. Obtain a similar '70 shifter and use that in the '67. The 901 shifters used in '71 and before should be the same.

    2. A 915 shift housing will fit (73-86), in which case, one could install the factory short shift kit into this housing to decrease the throw distance by about 24%.

    Go here for details.

There's also a chance a PO could have modified the shifter. There could be an aftermarket short shifter in your '70 chassis which would explain the throw distance in your '67. Is there a large spacer under the existing '70 shift housing? Is the '70 shift lever appreciably shorter than the '67 lever? This alone will decrease the throw distance but increase shifting effort.

    Hope this helps,
    Sherwood
