Sunoco Blue? - Penske RS Targa Color

I contacted the vendor of this car to see if they know the true color. They list it as Sunoco Blue but he thought it was the same as the stock Alberta Blue color. I'm very interested in this color and seriously considering using my 73 targa hot rod to clone the Penske car or use the color and do a ralley styled car in the same color.

Any ideas where I can obtain a correct colour match?

If it's a stock color it may be Acid Blue #354...

However, if you get a 'good' color corrected copy of the Sunoco logo you can have it color matched at a good auto paint shop.....

I think I'd stick with the closest stock period early Porsche color match ....

    Hope this helps,
    Cheers

I spent HOURS and HOURS and HOURS going through this with my car. After a lot of headache and heartache I finally settled on Dalmatian Blue. It was the closest blue that I could find to the blue that was used on the 917/30.

See, what nobody will tell you - but what you'll find with research - is that the SUNOCO livery colors actually changed a few times over the years. The darker blues were actually more purple - you saw these blues on the Camaro Trans-Am cars, the Ferrari 512s, the M6-B and M16 McLaren, the Lola Indy cars and Daytona racer. The later blues were less purple and more of an electric blue - again, the blue of the 1973 917/30.

I contacted SUNOCO directly to try and get their current color codes - no answer. I was told by a few painters that you can get the factory SUNOCO color codes by finding a Fleet Color Guide ... theoretically it should be listed in there but I don't know because I never bothered to take it that far.

What I ended up doing was buying a bunch of vintage SUNOCO stickers and picking the color variation that I liked the best ... turned out the closest factory color that my eye preferred was Dalmatian Blue.

Search these colors and see what you come up with:
    Cobalt Blue
    Acid Blue
    Dalmatian Blue
    Ossi Blue
    Albert Blue

    Good luck.

Vintage decals - that's dedication to finding the right color.

Thanks for the suggestions - those are definitely better than albert blue.

I actually really like Albert Blue - it's a GREAT color and looks beautiful in the afternoon sun. However, I just don't think it's quite right for what you're trying to accomplish.

I still have the sticker(s) that I used when I was doing my color search. If you want them, just PM me with your mailing address and I'll send 'em your way.

Back in 69, I contacted Penske Racing about the colors on the Camaro and was told that the Blue was a Sun Oil Company Fleet color.
I was only able to find the paint code in Dupont enamel. I then took the enamel and had it color matched in Nason acrylic lacquer ( the only one who would color match). I can no longer read the paint number on the can, but still have some of the original quart of Sunoco Blue.
