    Correct heat exchanger and exhaust color -1966 Normal

    That's a bit of a trick question because as most everybody knows the original heat exchangers were the subject of a comprehensive recall by Porsche due to leaks at the welds.

    The SSI-type were introduced as a retrofit in 1966. Then they made it onto the S and the Normal (and the effect on performance was sufficient on the normal to bump power to 140 from 130, necessitating restrictor rings in the muffler inlets until the 901/06 engine appeared with revised cams (from engine 911001).

    So the real question: what color are the factory heat exchangers on a 67S?

    And what color jet-hot should I use to replicate that? Standard gray?

    Any help would be appreciated, the B&W photos in the workshop manual are helpful, but I'm sure someone here knows.

    Here is a shot of 304069 when it was for sale, does this look right?

    G&W's 1965 1 owner Polo Red car has never been touched except by the owner and a well known factory mechanic (back in day) who "fixed" his Solexes. He got new C/V joints too as an "upgrade" repair.

    They also welded shields on his exchangers to protect the half-shafts from heat related issues.

    During the recall you could upgrade your heat exchangers for a fee to the "S" style. The factory claimed it made an addtional 10-12 DIN HP. The cost was $65 each. Part numbers, 901.211.018and 901.211.017.
    The factory campaign ran into February of 1967.

    That is cool information, I didn't know the numbers or the price!

    So who is G&W and does the car still have original HEs? I have only heard of ONE in existence through a friend of a friend of a friend, and certainly have never seen one in person.

    Anyway, back to the color? Gray correct?

    Looked under the all original '65 this past weekend.

    Gray.

    Although if they leak oil they could be "black".
