    Engine Rebuild Advice Sought-73 S

It appear I threw a rod on Cyl 2 ........made a nice hole in the( upper) case.....
As I have barely put 1000 miles on the car and bought from a " reputable dealer" I am not a happy guy......

Now that I am in for a total rebuild I'd like to do it right ....certainly to maintain the value of the car....

Car is stock numbers matching ... 73 S Targa with 98k

Question -----Should I try to save the case by weld repair or is that a bad idea ?

Any other recomendations before I get started ?

    Thanks ,

    Dennis

Would depend on the size and shape of the hole.....personally, I'd try and save it.

    Dumb question...

If you put a whole on the left half of the case (the side without the serial number), could you get a good left half, have them machined and rebuild it?

    Sorry for you troubles.

I'd get in touch with Ollie's or Competition Engineering or another extremely competent and reputable outfit, maybe send them pictures if you have them, and see what they say. I'm guessing that if it can be saved you will need line boring, blueprinting, etc etc to have a decent motor again. While there you may want to shuffle pin, boat tail and more, depending on whether you think you want the hit the track from time to time. Think $4-8k for the case alone. It will be less expensive to build a super 2.7S with PMO's, which will offer much more comfortable torque around town. Maybe put this motor in a box for the next owner to sort out?

Please share some photos; easier to give feedback. I'd certainly try to save the case, especially since the "case window" is on the top of the case.

    Another option

I have a factory blank 2.4 case for sale if you're interested.

    hole in case

This is a easy one. If in fact only the left side was damaged, you can get a used left side. A Porsche machine shop can surface grind the mating sufaces of both halfs, then align bore the bearing bores to stock again. I know someone who was restoring a 73 RS and they did this. Engine was put on a dyno and run. Zero problems and NO leaks. A used mag case to use as a donor is not rare.
