    Help decoding swb tranny

Not original to my '67S, it reads:
    901/05 #3282053
    ''68L ?
    Brian
    S Reg #1032

"I measured twice, cut three times, and it's still too short!"

    gear box

The 901/05 is a 68 box. It has gears AFMSX The correct box for your car is the 901/02 and has AFMSZ. Your current 5th is a little shorter than stock, but if top speed runs are you thing, it may be more fun to drive.

Why have you concluded that a Z fifth is correct for a 67S?

The 901 came with a Z fifth which was changed to an X after early production because the engine wasn't getting to the power peak.

As far as I know a 67S should have AFMSX just like a 66 normal (mine). Unless the Kardex says otherwise.

Now, when my own goes together it will be AFJOZD, airport with a cruiser 914 fifth. . .

I think you've got a typo there John. (There's no way I'm going to outright
correct John Cramer on some aspect of early cars.)

    Andy,

No, when I am wrong I admit it. I am wrong, I checked my type number table again, the S has a taller fifth.

    John,

Where are you stickin' that 6th forward gear? My 901 is stuffed in there with 5!

I was referring to 1st, should be AA as per your chart.
I meant that as a complement, being that you know more
about these early cars than just about anyone.

    901/05

You will notice that the 901/05 is not listed in John's chart. In fact it is extremely hard to find info on the 901/05. I had seen an erroneous post on Pelican stating a 901/05 box was a short geared vowel box. When I saw one for sale I bought it thinking it might be fun in my 67S. After I paid for it, the poster on Pelican wrote me to say he tore his /05 apart and it was not a vowel box, it was AFMSX. Oh well. I may still install it, I just do not see the need for a 140mph 5th gear.

LOL Mike a "ZD" is a teener fifth. Here are the charts, you can see it's a cruiser.
