Thread: Correct finish for Webasto muffler?

    Correct finish for Webasto muffler?

We are re-sealing the pan of a 67S and have the Webasto muffler off.

While it is off, it will be re-finished.

What is correct, satin black over factory style green primer?

    Thanks,

    Tom,

Here is a NOS heater which was never installed. I do not know if the kits which came with a car were differant than the installed units.

    Hope this helps.

    Webasto

    Bob:

Thanks for posting pics of the NOS Webasto - lovely looking bits there.

Looks like HPC silver will do the job but if you have a differing opinion for correct finish as installed please chime in.

boba, while you are on a run, I have another question.

The front Koni struts and dust caps are black. They have late 66 dates and lack winged Koni decals.

Should they be painted black or Koni orange? Decals, or no decals?

    Thanks,

    Webasto exhaust

    Tom,
Here is a 1966 exhaust with the factory part stickers still on them. Not sure what the paint looked like in 1966, but this is what it looks like after 42 years in storage!

    Hello Leon,

Yes, that is the same muffler and exhaust pipe as on the 67S.

It looks like the same gray paint as on the 901/1 muffler out back. Is that your opinion?

How did you do the finish "as installed" on your '66?

Any thoughts on the color for original equipment (not aftermarket) Koni installations on the 67S cars?

    Thanks for the pics.

    Webasto

    Leon, John, Raj and Bob:

Thank you very much for posting the helpful pics and information on the Webasto muffler and exhaust color!

    Flat gray it is.

I see from Raj's post that the Koni's on his 67S are Koni orange.

I was wondering about this as the fronts on my car are black and have early dates.

The rears on my car are replacement Konis judging from the dates which are '69. The rears appear to be in their original but faded color. Painted Koni orange, the winged Koni decals are present, but the dates indicate they are replacements.

So, I wondered what is correct for an original installation.

    67S Koni color

    Tom,
Peter Morgan's book "Original Porsche 911" shows a photo of the reddish/orange Koni on page 27 with the following caption: "The front suspension of an early 911S shows off a red Koni strut and ventilated disc with the M type cast iron caliper."
My vote is for flat gray on the exhaust and red/orange on the Koni's.
Looking forward to seeing your photos.
    Leon
